Piney Gir

espPiney Gir first came to Truck’s attention when she was a part of the electronic duo, Vic 20, performing at the Truck Festival in 2003. Not very much later we stuck her in the Truck studios with our super-producing duo A Scholar and A Physician, and they recorded ‘Peakahokahoo’. The album, released in 2004, covered country, lo-fi, synth pop, just synth and more. It featured the backing singers from Erasure, Simple Kid and members of Trademark, The Black Madonnas and a theremin. A grand experiment, and a successful one at that.

The success of the album led to a year of endless gigging in 2005, with A Scholar and A Physician (and sometimes A Technician) in tow. The gigs included a month-long European tour in support of Erasure and a BBC Radio 2 session featuring a special version of ‘Nightsong’ with dj Mark Radcliffe.

Never content to stop, Piney decided to explore her country inspirations that were briefly glimpsed on her debut album (for example in ‘Greetings, Salutations, Goodbye’), and in 2005 she formed the Piney Gir Country Roadshow. The results were unleashed in Texas at SxSW in 2006, and the album ‘Hold Yer Horses’ followed later in the year. This album was well receieved everywhere, from The Sun to a five star review in the Guardian.
