Rise Against’s recent records have been the angriest they have sounded in fifteen years. Alkaline Trio’s last LP was the most melodically generous of their late period. The two records sit next to each other on a shelf without apologizing.

Tim McIlrath has always sung like he was trying to be heard from the next neighborhood. Matt Skiba has always sung like he was trying to be heard from inside a basement. Together, on the same stage, that contrast becomes the actual show. You do not need to pick a side.
